Chinese Girls visit PCC July, 2007
Rev. Dr. Xiaoling Zhu, PCC elder and Global Ministries area executive for the East Pacific (DOC/UCC), is involved with helping the youth of a rural Chinese village where many of the adults sold their blood to augment their small income. Use of a common needle resulted in may of these people contracting AIDS. The Global Ministries project seeks sponsorship of Chinese youth who have lost one or more parents to AIDS. Global Ministries has also helped the village with other needs such as building a new school to replace a very run-down structure as well as building a number of homes to replace homes destroyed by heavy rains, etc. In short, this program is allowing these youth to remain in school and have hope for the future.
Rev. Zhu was able to bring two of these youth plus a college student who has been helping at the village and who served as a translator to the United States in July. The youth include a girl sponsored by a church family and another girl sponsored by the church elders. One of our church families hosted a welcoming party for the girls upon their arrival in Parma. The girls were able to spend time at Camp Christian in Ohio, attend the General Assembly in Texas, and also spend time at a UCC camp in California.
